Celia Searles born and raised in a suburb of Kansas City, Prairie Village. Searles grew up with loving parents and little brother and is close with all of her relatives in their own different ways. The Searles household however didn’t allow Disney or Nickelodeon, so PBS dominated the big screen. Searles loved watching Arthur, Cyberchase, Dragon Tales. While growing up Mr. Searles has made an major impact into the type of music and movies Celia is interested ever since she was a little girl. Notably the Beatles, Sci-fi and food documentaries.
Seales never had thought of Saint Louis University as a possibility until she visited a college search site and narrowed it down with her personal needs “and boom it just popped up”. However Seales is no stranger to the St. Louis area as her grandparents have lived here their entire life. Seales would often visit for family occasions. This did not impact Seales in the college decision process. “I would always choose KC over St. Louis”.
Searles first began as a Psychology major. At the end of her first year at a crossroad because she knew she wanted to switch majors but didn’t know what to do. She found her calling after some evaluation and some advice of her parents to explore writing. She recalls when she was little she would enjoy making small newsletters every week for her family a. For Searles her creativity writing has always been a hobby and when she realized that she could make a career out of she made the switch. “I thought I would give it a try and enroll in some intro classes. I never looked back and it’s been awesome”. Now she is majoring in communication with a focus on PR.
Searles is apart of the Kappa Delta sorority. Searles has always looked forward to rushing because of the stories and relationships her mom talked about. “My parents actually met through Greek life. My dad was a Pi Kappa Alpha and my mother was a Kappa Alpha Theta but it wasn’t necessarily for the purpose of finding a romantic interest but to have that social outlet of meeting new people.” Seales is apart of the Philanthropy Committee as well and has grown passionate to the Cuts for Confidence organization. She loves giving as many creative ideas as she can, anything from graphic design to decorating or using PR to promote “something that is bigger than herself”.
Ms. Searles is heavily involved with “Girls On the Run” here in St. Louis. In the first semester of her freshman year she ran the marathon. The following semester she became a coach for young girls. Now she is a volunteer committee leader for the organization. She wished she could have coached again but unfortunately the school she has partnered with is, won’t be having a team this semester.“ What’s so rewarding about this program is that when you first come in you see these girls they have behavioral issues and weren’t confident in their ability to run a 5k. At the end you see these girls who have grown so much and have this confidence in themselves and in their body and realize this is attainable.” Searles is sad that she won’t be part of the program next semester because she will be studying abroad.
